Each Cub Scout in pack 86 will be supplied a pinewood derby kit in December. The pinewood derby car is an excellent opportunity for you and your scout to help build and paint the car together.
The following rules must be followed and will be checked at pre-race inspection:
The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale shall be considered final. (most kitchen scales work well)
The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 3⁄4 inches.
The car must have 1 3⁄4” clearance between the wheels.
The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body.
The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired.
The wheels supplied with the kit must be used unless official pinewood derby wheels of a different color are purchased at the scout shop. Non-official BSA wheels are prohibited. Modification of the wheels is not allowed.
The axles supplied with the kit must be used. They may be polished or lubricated.
Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
The car must not ride on any type of springs.
The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.
Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered teflon "white lube" will be allowed for lubricating the wheels. Lubricants may not foul the track.
Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee will let you know of any problems and you will have an opportunity to correct the car prior to race time. Please come early to check-in to give sufficient time for any corrections.
A SECOND race will be held for siblings and parents called the “OUTLAW DIVISION” and if there are enough mom's building their own cars, then we will have a “MOM’s race” again. The same rules apply as above. Great fun if you have a younger or older sibling or even a competitive dad that wants to race their own car. Moms, this is a chance to show your scout what you can do! Extra car kits are available at meetings for $5 or can be purchased at a scout shop, just make sure they are official BSA ones!
Our Scout Pack has a scale available. It will be brought to all Scout meetings in January and February and on Derby day if you want to test weigh your car. You can also stop by the post office and use the scale there as well or any kitchen scale will give you a good reading of ounces.
We need volunteers to help put the race on!
